To better understand these learning styles I enaged the use of the Index of Learning Styles to assess my own preferences of the model formulated by Richard M. Felder and Linda K. Silverman, which looks at learning in four dimensions: active/reflective, sensing/intuitive, visual/verbal, and sequential/global (Index of Learning Styles, n.d.).
My results came out as :

While I came out in the middle ground for sensing/intuitive and sequential/global I discovered I had a slight preference for reflective learning and a high preference for visual learning. Lucky I did a visual arts degree then! Their website says that a reflective learner would “find it helpful to write short summaries of readings or class notes in your own words. Doing so may take extra time but will enable you to retain the material more effectively.” Whilst a visual learner could “Prepare a concept map by listing key points, enclosing them in boxes or circles, and drawing lines with arrows between concepts to show connections” (Index of Learning Styles, n.d.). It would seem that my instinct to make a course mind map was right on the money!
