Learning styles

Upon referring to the lectures I realised I had not yet looked closely at the section on learning channels/styles. I have come across Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences before and am familiar with the strengths of utilising these in certain situations (particularly intra- and interpersonal intelligence in the workplace!) But the other models were new to me.

I looked up the Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles Model, McCarthy's 4 MAT System, and Gregoric's Mediation Abilities Model. There is a great table that summarises these three here. It's amazing to think there may be as many as 21 specific styles of learning such as with the Dunn model (Ethica Self Beyond Self, 2009) . It must be an effort for teachers to cover all of those!

The concept of learning styles is particularly interesting to me at the moment as I watch my 9 month old daughter learn a new task almost weekly and I am starting to feel the pressure of parenthood and the demands of ensuring you are providing a rich, stimulating environment. What if she was a visual learner? Had an auditory penchant? A kinesthetic predilection? Have I given her the opportunity to learn via these channels?
